A's Story with Criminal Justice Mentors

When participant 'A' first engaged with the service in May 2026, they were dealing with the consequences of a conviction that had received local publicity. The situation had resulted in the loss of their place on a HND course, leaving them uncertain about their future education and career prospects. Rather than disengaging, participant 'A' chose to seek support and explore alternative pathways that would allow them to continue developing their skills and improve their long-term employability.

Working closely with their employability mentor, participant 'A' explored a range of retraining opportunities, with a particular focus on distance learning and higher education. Their strong interest in further study led him to investigate opportunities with the Open University, where they identified a course aligned with their career ambitions. Throughout June, participant 'A' remained committed to their goal, attending appointments, researching course content, credits towards achievement and carefully considering how any restrictions attached to their circumstances might impact their ability to study successfully.

Although the Open University's assessment process ultimately determined that participant 'A' could not progress with their preferred Cyber Security pathway, he approached the setback positively and remained focused on finding a solution. The university confirmed that alternative study routes remained available through its specialised Students in Secure Environments programme, ensuring that opportunities for higher education were still open to him. Participant 'A' discussed their options with their Employability Mentor and together they explored the ins and outs of each option, eventually picking modules that would allow them to complete their degree, without breaching restrictions.

Importantly, participant 'A' has continued to demonstrate motivation and a genuine commitment to personal development. Rather than allowing obstacles to define their future, they have actively engaged in discussions around alternative qualifications and has been accepted on to a Business Degree course that will enable them to continue progressing towards their educational and employment goals.

Participant A's journey highlights the value of persistence, targeted support, and maintaining a positive outlook when faced with barriers. Their willingness to adapt, explore new opportunities, and remain engaged in education planning represents a significant step forward. As they continue to work towards their degree. Participant A remains focused on building new skills, improving their prospects, and creating a brighter future for themself.

Through sustained engagement, proactive planning, and a commitment to learning, Participant A has successfully navigated a series of complex barriers and remains on a positive path towards further education, personal growth, and increased employability.
