Owen's Story with Equal

Owen registered with Equal in January 2026 and was initially supported by his Employment Advisor, Holly. During their first meeting, Owen explained that he had previously worked as a chef within the hospitality industry but was keen to pursue a new career path in an office based role.
Owen also shared that he experienced anxiety, which he felt was a barrier to progressing into employment. To support him in overcoming these challenges, Holly discussed the services available through Salus and arranged a referral. Through regular one-to-one support sessions, Owen was able to develop coping strategies, build his confidence, and better manage his anxiety.
As part of his journey, Owen received support to update his CV. Working closely with Holly, a new, professional CV was created that better reflected his skills, experience, and career aspirations within an office based role.
During his time with Equal, Owen was introduced to the Heads Up Training Academy, a Sector-Based Work Academy Programme that combines accredited learning with practical work experience. The programme includes one day per week in the Equal office working towards SQA qualifications, alongside two days of work experience with a local employer. Recognising the opportunity to develop his skills and strengthen his CV, Owen was eager to take part.
Owen secured a work placement with local employer G2BS, where he gained valuable experience carrying out a range of administrative duties within an office environment. Throughout the placement, Owen demonstrated a strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn. Both Holly and Employer Services Advisor Steven received consistently positive feedback from Owen and the team at G2BS regarding his performance and commitment.
Following the successful completion of the Heads Up Training Academy, Owen achieved SQA qualifications, gained current and relevant administrative work experience, and significantly increased his confidence. Equipped with new skills and practical experience, he felt ready to begin applying for long-term career opportunities within the banking and administration sectors.
When Owen identified a vacancy for a Business and Retail Banking Apprentice with Shawbrook Bank, he felt confident in pursuing the opportunity. After successfully progressing through an initial interview, he was invited to a second-stage interview, which included delivering a presentation he had prepared. Throughout the recruitment process, Owen remained in regular contact with Holly and Steven, who provided guidance, encouragement, and interview support.
Owen's hard work and determination paid off when he was offered the apprenticeship position. He is due to begin his role as a Business and Retail Banking Apprentice with Shawbrook Bank this September.
Holly, Owens Employment Advisor said: "Owen has shown tremendous commitment throughout his journey with Equal. It has been fantastic to see him grow in confidence, gain valuable experience, and secure an apprenticeship in a completely new sector. We wish him every success in his future career."
Owen's journey demonstrates the positive impact of tailored employability support, work experience opportunities, and specialist wellbeing services. Through his commitment, combined with support from Equal, the Heads Up Training Academy, and Salus, Owen successfully transitioned into a new career path and achieved his goal of securing sustainable employment in a sector that excites and motivates him.
